  1.    Describe the character of Stepan Stapanovitch Chubukov.

Ans: – In Anton’s one-act play  ‘The Proposal’, Stepan Stepanovitch Chubukov portrays the role of a sensible and cunning father who tries to protect his property. He knows his responsibilities for his daughter’s marriage.  He looks at marriage as an economical settlement rather than a social agreement to live together. He knows very well that he can easily control Lomov once he gets married to his daughter. This is why he heartily welcomes Lomov when he arrives at his house with the proposal to marry his daughter. Though we also see that in the course of the play he abuses Lomov and drives him out of his house but soon after he brings him back as he does not want to lose Lomov to be his son-in-law. This act of Chubukov holds up an example of his cunningness and sensibility towards his daughter.

 2.    Describe the character of Natalya.

Ans:Natalya, a lovesick cat as her father calls her,  is a young unmarried girl of twenty-five years. She is well educated, an excellent housekeeper, and fairly good-looking. But on the other side, she is very quarrelsome in nature and we find it several times in the play. She develops a long furious quarrel over the disputed land called Oxen Meadows and in the fight over the dog she even abuses his family members. If one closely examines Natalya’s character, one will definitely find the loneliness and disparity for the love of a husband. It becomes even more clear when she forces his father to bring him back. At last, it can be said that Anton has taken extra care while sketching Natalya’s character as a countryside unmarried good-looking woman by blending her character with ego, argumentativeness, and lovesickness.
